Fascist: a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist ideology and movement, charaterized by a dictatorial leader, and forcible suppression of opposition.
On April 28, 1945, Benito Mussolini's dream of re-creating the Roman Empire, much like the crumbling Roman Forum itself, lay in ruins. With the Allied forces closing in from the south and anti-fascist partisans rising up to seize city after city in northern Italy, Mussolini's power base was quickly evaporating. He tried to escape but was unsucessful.
Mussolini, 61, carried his dreams of becoming a modern-day Julius Caesar to his execution. He and his mistress were forced to stand against a stone wall and be killed by machine gun fire. They were then hanged by their feet in the town square where their bodies were savagely beaten by the town's residents.
As World War II wound down, Mussilini's Fascist fighters and Hitler's Nazi party were kaput. The people of the world who saw what these two monsters represented finally put an end to them and their wretched dreams.
Today, America is facing men and women who dream of something greater for themselves - and something much less for the rest of us.
If we stay on our guard, we, too, will be victorious over those who believe they have a right to completely overturn a democracy that has been standing for nearly 250 years!
As for dispatching our Fascists, however, I'm sure we will find a more humane way to do it.
Or will we?
