It's a long drive home. . .

It's nearly midnight and we still have a long drive yet to go. There seems like nothing but  a lonely highway, a glimpse of faint yellow stripes on the roadway, and a bright, full moon just hanging there in the sky.

We've been through a lot in our lifetime, but the past few years have tested the grit and determination of our bodies and souls. Sure, we have all seen world wars, personal grief, global catastrophes, accidental death and injuries, family disputes, and marital breakups. And, on a lesser scale, we have had our share of political head-bangers, too.

But the collapsing of our nation's spirit and hope has never been tested like it is today. One man, a pied-piper  of gullible citizens, a mesmerizing figure of lies and conspiracy theories, gathered our weakened brothers and sisters and swallowed them up in a cult the likes of which has never been seen in our nation.

He has promised them a future that is a thousand times more dark than anything they could imagine on their own. They have been blinded by a string of lies that may have sealed their eyes  as well as their senses for an eternity.

The America most of us knew is slipping away. It is as dimly lit as the road up ahead. What has happened is beyond our understanding. This is a time when those we placed in roles of leadership are supposed to know what to do for us. Sadly, many of them have selfishly found riches on the other side.

It is still a long, dark and dangerous journey home. And it will take all of our trust in our democracy to get us home.
