Farewell to America?
Although they used to be just words used by a politician warning us of what could happen if we voted for his/her opponent. We now know they can be much more. Suddenly, it is the cold, hard truth brought to bear on our nation's homeland. The thought of losing our rule of law, our constitution, an our democracy is now very clear and all too real.
Ernest Hemingway wrote in "A Farewell to Arms,"My life used to be full of everything. Now if you aren't with me, I haven't a thing in the world."
Hemingway directed those words to a lady, but I have similar feelings for another "lady" - the greatest lady of all: Lady Justice! She is the personification of the oral force in judicial systems. Her attributes are scales, a sword and sometimes a blindfold.
Our nation, today, has had those attributes questioned by a man named Donald Trump who fancies he has far better attributes to give all of us: His own brand of justice, his own rules of law, his own idea of - not a constitution - but rather a "manifesto" for the people to live by, and his own brand of authoritarian rule.
For the seventy-plus million Republicans who voted for his spiel - minus a few who woke up way too late for the inauguration - he has piled up an impressive lead in whether his dictatorship will succeed or fail. However, for it to become a reality, one very important issue must be decided: "Will "We the People" allow it to happen?"
America is still a land of the people, by the people and for the people - and that will always be the final determination!
It will take a whole lot of work from all of us who care!
