I fear for our/my democracy
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on February 27, 1951.
The history of direct democracy amongst non-Native Americans in the United States dates from the 1630s in the New England Colonies. The legislatures of the New England colonies were initially governed as popular assemblies, with every freeman eligible to directly vote in the election of officers and drafting of laws.
Those countries whom we generally acknowledges as our adversaries are best answered by those politicians and their party affiliation. As an example, the President Biden administration certainly onsidered Russia, controlled by Putin, an adversary. About three months ago, President Trump and his administration would not have placed Putin even near the top of the list.
And for this reason are my fears of losing our democracy!
It is certainly no secret that Trump's goals are to convert our nation into an authoritarian rule of law. Each day and in every way, he showed us signs of rendering our government unimportant by either cutting the departments to pieces or eliminating them altogether! He has no respect for our Justice Department and continues to override our Rule of Laws. He has cozied up to dictators and authoritarians around the globe. Trump finds their countries preferrable to our "laws and regulations too confining" for his business friends." He usually leans toward their wishes while threatening to do away with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and such things that were designed for the people years ago! Trump and his friends are more interested in how many tax breaks they can get for the affluent. Dealing with pesky attorneys, judges, and anyone who says "no" to him is one more roadblock to his dislike for a democracy!
America's democracy is, in my opinion, hanging by a thread and Trump is looking for a way - every day - to cut that thread, and If I haven't made myself clear enough, let me put it this way. . .
Donald Trump is America's most ruthless adversary, and he will be as long as we continue to allow him to emerses himself in our political future!
I distinctly remember hearing Russia's Nikita Khrushchev in a speach on television in the 60's in the presence of John F. Kennedy: "I won't have to go to war with America. . . they are going to be taken over from within!"
